Feeling worthless?

When do you feel worthless?

For me, I felt worthless when I was not appreciated. You did/do something with no feedback from the other side. But seeing the other party response to someone else's actions just make it harder for you to swallow it. You are left alone, feeling unappreciated.

Perhaps that is what happening to me now. So what to do? Uttering my signature line.."sabar je lah". Think positive on why this thing happened and try to make an empathize conclusion that they had better things to attend to. Perhaps, my needs are not important to someone else's. Or maybe I'm being tested because Allah knows that I can handle it? I like to think so. Just to make myself feel happy. And surprisingly, these thoughts helped :-)

So..

15 Ramadhan

Alhamdulillah,

It has been 15 days of Ramadhan. So far so good. I've made good of the nights (I'd missed only 2 nights of Tarawih). Other than that, the transformation of myself had been well.

Malaysian Delicacies

My break fast locations were mixed. Most of the time at home, few times at the masjid (my mom insisted me to go because she is the Masjid AJK), I've been to IKEA buffet, Seoul Bulgogi, Mirza's house and few other places including mamak stalls. Not to mention bubur lambuk Kg. Baru everyday brought home by my dad. Yes, everyday! hehe.. Tonight I'll be joining my batch mates to buka puasa at MCOBA Penthouse. This is one of our annual events and InsyaAllah this year we'll have Tarawih as well (which previously selalu escape due to 'dah biasa' attitude! hehe)

Nasi Kerabu

I must say, this is one of the colorful Ramadhan I've had in these past 4 years. It felt different, nevertheless it is refreshing. If previously in the States, I only ate one chicken dish with rice, now I hardly eat rice, with various dishes and kuih-muih. My favorite so far is...hard to say lah, everything is good! :-) But I love murtabak, nasi kerabu & laksam. Yeah, I'm not a Kelantanese (Kejor yob kejor all the way!) but my taste bud seemingly geared towards KB delicacies. Hmm..to do justice I should fuse both foods together. Perhaps Nasi Kerabu Tempoyak or Laksam with cendol Kuala.

Laksam

Puasa 15 hari, turun 1.5 kg. Puasa lagi 15 hari turun 3 kg in total. Raya 1 hari naik 2 kg. Raya sebulan...imagine yourself!

Selamat Berpuasa to everyone. Hope you have a blessed Ramadhan. Tahan la nafsu sikit, tak lama dah nak raya! Grab this opportunity to seek Allah's blessing. Oh, one more thing. If you could please make a du'a for me to land a job soon. I've applied to almost 10 companies to no replies. I've started to feel edgy a bit due to lack of attention..hehe..Thank you guys! :-)

Justin Bieber & a spoiled tarawih

I was waiting in line to get my drinks for iftar at Masjid nearby. Suddenly I heard a small voice singing "Baby..baby..baby oooo.." I look around and see no one was making a concert (I meant, no one is singing passionately la..) Then the words were heard again. It was the little boy in front of me who was singing quietly.

That's fine.

But after the boy walk away & take his seat, someone was hymning the "Baby" song behind my back. Haiyoo, the boy had sparked a chain of fans in the line! I looked back & to my astonishment, it was an adult, in his 30's i guess, hymning the whole song from the start. I creep a smile and walk away without showing my face to him.

Funny..But..

The incident kept the songs ringing in my ears, throughout the tarawih! Aarghh, there was no Satan to whisper in my ears, but I guess the JB Jinn had caught up to me. Habis tak kusyuk aku! Sabar je la..

What is done, is done!

My favorite quote of the day, (from someone's blog I stumbled upon, if you knew it's urs, pinjam ek..! :-P )

So basically, what is done, is done. Don't regret, move on with it because the broken had been done, you can't turn back time. Find the solution and learn from it. People make mistakes. But don't be afraid to make mistakes. Learn from your mistakes and vow to not wanting to repeat them again.

Think before you act. An easy statement that is hard to obey. I often found myself guilty of committing this crime through words. I may utter a very ridiculous statement without thinking, just for the sake of "reasoning"(alasan). Tak bagus, tak bagus.

Cinta Kirana

I admit that these past few weeks had been tough for me. I've been searching for jobs and having depressed a bit. I stayed home for most of the time and one of the way for me to kill my time is watching Sinetron on Astro Ria. My mind is now hooked on Cinta Kirana, casting from Nia Ramadhani & Randy Palalala....tah, apa nama pun tak tau! not important..hehe

The reason I like the show is because of Nia (of course). Not just because she is beautiful, but also the way she represents the character of an honest person. She was brought up by her grandma in the 'kampung' and was fairly modest in appearance; nicely tied hair, t-shirt, khaki shorts and flip-flops. She lead her life according to what she believe is fair and truthful. She always get mad when being sidelined by the rich and often being labelled as un-civilized. Beneath her iron skin, she is loyal to her friends and hardworking to earn an honest living. Never she did try to gain wealth through unwarranted means. All in all, I fell in love with her character. Nia Ramadhani is now happily married. Haish..melepas den! hehe..

There's one scene in the show that portrays a typical Malay mindset. When (Kirana) was crying and caught attention of Galang (Randy), whom previously demise the introduction of Kirana to his wealthy family. Suddenly, Galang felt sympathy of Kirana because of her condition, often being taunted and insulted by his family. When Galang's grandma look at the sudden change of attitude of Galang towards Kirana, she quickly justify the situation as being, Galang had been under Kirana spell (black magic, santau all that stuff la..).

Why is the Malay mindset always quick to justify people's action or inaction to black magic? Is it because it is the convenience excuse for us to make quick decision accordance to our feelings? Yes, there are cases of things happen because of that. However, according to Dr. Fadzilah Kamsah, "we should sought, professional, sane mind to help out our troubles first, before asserting to alternative means." By quickly justifying each condition to such anathematic act we will forever be narrow minded. We need openness in life to help us lead a blessed life by Allah SWT. InsyaAllah..

Hello Bloggies,

Sorry for the very silence I've been ( I know, I've been apologizing to much now..hehe). I'm now back in Malaysia (KL) for good. Still looking for the right job, still applying here and there.

People had been surprised with my unemployed status. Most of them saying "Grad oversea pun tak bley dapat kerja lagi?" Haha..I know, it is the hard time in the economy. Not so much of its being in the recession. Because post-recessionary state is the worst of all, which unluckily, it is this current moment. Plus, I'm so stubborn to verge out of my line (Insurance/Banking) to search for marketing/management jobs. Hehe..I'm trying to pursue my passion without the much needed experience in hand, very hard to do. However, things are looking bright again. Lots of people trying to help me searching for the right job. Alhamdulillah, perhaps Allah grant my wishes.

On the other note, this is what had been pulling me down for the past week. Sharifah Farah & I are no longer an item. Don't ask me why, but we let it off in good terms. 4 years & 10 months. Both of us are still being good friends with each other. No hard feelings. Mind you, if you read this, you are one of the earliest to know about it. Even my Mom & Family doesn't know about it yet.

I've been around, here and there for the past a month & a half since I've touchdown in KLIA. The best thing is finally, I'm able to fast & celebrate Raya with my family after the long 4 years. Alhamdulillah. I feel very much lively this Ramadhan and so far had been making good use of the nights :-) I'll make good use of this month with lots of prayers to soothe my soul & to re energized my ibadah. InsyaAllah.

Suddenly it strucks me, everything in life is about perspective. Whether you see it from your POV or others. But when you become the big "decision-maker", you must try to look it from different angle of the problem, solution & REPERCUSSIONS! Some people throw the last thing out and yet feels good about the decision that they make. Doesn' that construed being Zalim?

Like what happen to South Park this past week. The creator of South Park (Matt & Trey) got death notes from an extremist so-called Islamic group. They portray the prophet Muhammad SAW as a God of Muslim and trying to show his figure.

The issue is totally wrong! (Muhammad is just a prophet, normal human being like everyone but is appointed as a Prophet by Allah)
I know that Free Speech is a right, but DO NOT misuse it to make fun of sensitive issues.
Those so-called Islamic radical group, please don't misuse the name of Allah for your own political game. Plus, don't use JIHAD as the platform to spread your crooked lust. Held a dialogue or press conference or anything to EDUCATE people, not threatening them.

Just a plain case of not seeing things from all angles.

Final game in Beaver Stadium!

Today is the Blue & White game; an annual event which Penn State Football team showcase its ability for next season. They play each other (1st team vs. 2nd team), somewhat like watching Penn State team training on the pitch. But, it is going to be fun! Last year Penn State fans flock the FREE event to amount 76500 fans..That's crazy! Because it is not a real game, just watching the team training on the field. To be able to pull out the number shows how big pool of fan that Penn State really has.

And this is why I'm going to miss Penn State Football..

This will surely be my very last attendance at Beaver Stadium as an undergraduate student. I may be coming back here in the future (as an Alumni) to watch a game, I may be not. Who knows..It's sad to think about it but life must go on..right guys? Funny to realize that at the same time last year, I was telling Daju' that she's going to miss this type of atmosphere. Now, I am the one who will actually step in her shoes. I will going to have fun and try not to be sad. Enjoying my last time here at Penn State.

Riba': The untold story

I've always been sceptical on what have I learned in class so far. In my course, the essence of Financial/Insurance system is breeding money through interests (ie: compound interest = interest over interest). But I never know to what extend is Riba' in our daily lives.

After I've attended an online discussion with few of my MCOBs, now I understand why I felt a bit sceptical from the start. It IS definitely Riba'.

"Riba equals to interest of any size. Riba = “gain accompanies gain”. No lose situation for the owner of money." - Zahid Aziz, Muamalah Financial Consulting

The definition of interest of any size is including receiving the interest from banks on your savings account. Why is that? Because you've never agree upon investing in that bank to gain your money! The word investment means that you will definitely know there are 2 outcomes from it, gain money or losing money. Having only to gain the money by interests payment is not in line with Shariah law.

While having to gain money, without losing is good (better yet, logically superior because who want to lose their money?), it is not what had been underlined by the Shariah in Al-Quran & As-Sunnah. As a devout Muslim, we have already agreed that everything sets in Al-Quran is the word of God and HIS messengers which been given to us to live according to HIS wishes. Therefore, we have to obey HIS rule (Shariah Law) and learn how to apply it in our daily lives.

So, what should we do? I'll take on these suggestions from this website:

1) Avoid Riba' altogether by switching to Islamic Finance system. (Kuala Lumpur is currently THE Islamic Finance capital of the world!)
2) If you can't avoid them, try to minimize as little as possible in the transaction.
3) Lessen your debt, pay more upfront (deposits) to reduce the amount of interest paid.

Do your best and your life will be blessed by Allah, InsyaAllah..Allah knows best.

Three Cups of a Tea (the power of mind-setting!)

I've always wanted to write about this book in a while. I picked up this book at Walmart last 2 winter. Haha, I know, it has been years ago & not a place that you will go to find a good book at the first place! At that time I was broke and staying up at State College while all my roommates went to West Coast. It was sad but I kill my time at home with XBox & this book.

Three Cups of a Tea - A true story

Well, this book is about Greg Mortenson, an avid American mountaineer who lost his way at K2 (the second highest peak in the world & the most dangerous of all!) and being saved by villagers high up in the Pakistan Karakoram region. Korphe (the village name) was a peaceful-islamic village but desperately poor. Even with their poor status, they treat Mr. Mortenson the best they could with clothing and foods. One day, after his condition improves, he walked around the village to see what he can do to pay them back. He stumbled upon group of kids, sitting on pile of stones, holding sticks in their hands and scribbling on the dirt. When he approached them, he was brought down to tears as the kids was actually revising what they had learned a day before and the place they were seating on is actually their classroom. The teacher didn't come that day because it wasn't the teacher's turn to come and teach in Korphe. Korphe shares the teacher with other villages nearby as they don't have enough money to pay the teacher. From that moment on, Mr. Mortenson vow to built a formal school for them.

His first hurdled was; Greg Mortenson was only a male nurse! He wasn't rich man. He didn't even have an apartment because he usually bunked at the hospital's locker room. However, he had made a promise to people in Korphe that he will come back and built a school for them. He stick to it. He wrote hundreds of letters (with typewriter because he was computer illiterate!) to raise funds for the school. No one trust him. But he never give up. He saved his own money and keep on reaching people in America to help him built a school in Pakistan. One day, he managed to convince a fellow mountaineer to fund his project. Since then, he never look back and to-date his Central Asia Institute had built 130 schools in Pakistan & Afghanistan higher regions!

There were many conflicts involve in his quest. But he never backed down. He determine to help those poor people even though he didn't have anything on his own! He built the school totally free of charge and change the community's life forever. Now they could have regular school days, physicians to take care of their health, more vibrant economic activities and the best of all, spread education to lessen extremism views in that region! His school is independently govern by the community and it teaches local syllabus (including Islamic subjects; Quran recitations, Islamic Laws/Values & such!)

Greg Mortenson hasn't embrace Islam yet. However, his values & effort does portray positive signs. He respects Islam. He even perform the 5 a-day prayer with the community (once in while though). His intention never wanting to spread bad influence or converting people to any religion. His goal is clear; to educate and improves people's life through education. What a noble individual!

He is the living example that with correct mind-set, anything is possible. He has the motivation to make it happen. He built a very powerful organization from scratch (literally! because he himself has no money/assets to start with) which now has more than 130 schools in the region. I wish I have that determination.

Food Revolution!

Assalamualaikum & Hello to everyone!

I know that it has been almost a year (11 months to be exact) after my last post! But hey, nobody wants to hear my ramblings anyway :-P haha..Thanks to everyone that has been pressuring me to start writing in my blog again. So from here on forwards, I'll at least try and keep this thing up & going.

I wanted to share with everyone about Jamie's Oliver: Food Revolution TV show. For everyone who has not hear about this AMAZING reality show, it is about Jamie Oliver (the British celebrity chef a.k.a the "Naked Chef") coming to America and try to change the way people views & consuming food. He has astonishingly succeed in Britain where he managed to get the school system over there to eat healthily and trying to bring that success to a small town in West Virginia. Apparently, Huntington,WV (that's the town's name) was voted as the most unhealthy city in the world in 2008! Can you imagine that his effort is trying to change the worst town in the world to get into his eating-healthy-scheme. Good luck on that!!

There were so much resistance that I reckon he would not succeed. However, giving that this is a reality TV show, almost all problems were solved. But it is not how the problems being solved, but his motivation, care-ness and desire to help all the people to eat-healthily is a feat of its own. If his effort doesn't move the people that he's trying to help, at least I can proudly say that he moves me.

I am so into healthy eating, but I know that my body doesn't portray my motivation. I'm a bit overweight. I've been avoiding process-food all around (fast foods, nuggets, soft drinks etc.) and have been succeeding in doing it all. However, I believe that my body needs more than healthy food to stay healthy. That's why I'm hitting the gym, playing more soccer, walking to class & just drink lots of water. It's getting there. So far I've lost 4 kg in 1 month. Give & take..haha!

Well, this posting is not about me, it is about Jamie Oliver and change. If you put your mind to it, you can succeed. Seeing what Jamie has done has inspired me to help other people eating properly. I may not be the best role-model out there but I know I can make a difference, if I want to.

So, pick up a salad once in a while. Eat more veggies. And remember, drink lots of WATER. Not process/carbonated/energy/caffeine more than you drink water. Have a bottle of 500ml mineral water at your desk all the time. It doesn't have to be strictly mineral, filtered tap water would do.

There you go. Make a difference in your life, eat healthy foods.

Finals Week

Long Distance

If someone ask me, "is long-distance relationship tough?" I say, downright yeah!!

But, there's always beauty in each bad situation. You'll love the other person more. Even if your brain trying to say otherwise, you won't be able to lie your heart. All this while, I've been there for you. Not physically though..Maybe that's my weakness. I can't be there in front of you. Literally!

There are always going to be struggle. Life without struggle is not worth living for. It's not how you get the struggle that matters the most, it's how you handle them.

Hang in there will ya. It's a bumpy ride, but I'll hold your hands through & through. I may not be the best person for you, but I'll be there for you when you need me.

Talking with the most savvy mom alive!

I was talking to my mom this morning, (afternoon actually) from 11am till 12.30pm. I know it's long, but if you ask my roommates, I did like to chat long hours with my mom and dad =) I don't know why, but I never bored when listening to them!

Today we talk about lots of stuff. But the one interesting subject is the current financial meltdown. I was telling my mom about how AIG / Citigroup is going to be dead after their stock prices crashed like a potato to a meager $1 per share. Then she gives her opinion on the matter. I was quite surprise to learn that she was really savvy in this financial stuff! Remarkably, every single word that she uttered was the direct definition of what I've learnt in class so far. The best thing is, my mom & dad never had formal education for financial stuffs. They learn them from experience.

I guess hardship did teached them a lot. I'm proud of my savvy parents! I hope they'll be proud of their son too =P hehe..

I'm so proud to be a Penn Stater today for witnessing a hope & effort transformed into a miracle. Even in the midst of economic crisis, THON (a student-led fund raising organization) managed to collect $ 7.5 million dollars to help kids that are diagnosed with cancer. They had been dancing for 46 hours straight without sitting down since Friday (but they did have meal and bathroom breaks though) to show that they cared and would like to make a difference in the fight against cancer.

I am touch with the way Penn Stater come together hand-in-hand to raise money for cancer treatment. It was indeed a remarkable feat. Congratulations to everyone in THON. Even though I'm not directly involve with THON 2009, but I believe that I already did my part and proud of it =)

Malaysian & Politics

Salam & good day to everyone,

It has been awhile since I've updated my blog. I've been cramped busy (alasan..I know!) with exams & 19 credits. Even in the midst of my busyness, I was still got the chance to read around about the current political situation in Malaysia.

One word that can make me describe the ordeal is “disgraceful”. I believe almost everyone knows what my political affiliation is. But I write this blog NOT on what I believe in, but rather as my perception on the whole current situation in Malaysia. I respect both side (Government & Opposition) for their contribution to Malaysia. However for some of the political-games that have been unfolded recently makes me feel utterly ashamed of my own country.

I don't need to elaborate more on what had happened in Malaysia, but I strongly opposed the quarrel of politicians in the looms of economic crisis. Both sides should shrugged the idea of "taking control" and start to control! Look at what have the Obama administration done to the US economy. They had working hand in hand with the opposition to the betterment of their economy. They prioritize on what should be done first. I see this lack of vision in Malaysia. Both sides are quarelling even after the election. Let it go and get on with the country's agenda!

My personal opinion, the reason for what is happening in Malaysia can be drawn to several conclusion.

1) When there are not enough transparency in Malaysian Government. The government work too ambiguosly in reaching a policy.
Solution: Opened up your veil and let the people audit your work. Start by giving an open bid for tenders RM 1 million & above. Display the winner in the papers, news etc.

2) The Malaysian mainstream media looks free but in the real case it is not. Politicians in the government are always given the opportunity to speak freely in media. This is not the true case for opposition.
Solution: Let the media alone. Give same rights to all politician regardless of its affiliation. Let the people decide the story if it's true or not. Don't revoke licenses on media that reported against the government. Nobody is perfect so the government should not think that they are. Face the music, don't dodge it.

3) Malaysian politics are too rigid to their own parties. When they are in power, they only assign position to the people from their own political affiliation. Sometimes, incapable leaders are thrown to a position which people feels he/she doesn't deserve the seat.
Solution: Try to mix & match. Find the true capable leaders and give them trust. Be responsible to the people too, not only to your party. The US, British & other countries can do it, why not us?

Malaysian should speak up more. Speak your mind out. Be constructive and not condemning. If you see flaws, address it, and propose a solution. Condemnation will not solve the problem. Ideas and actions upon ideas will solve the problem.

I'm not the ungrateful son who forgets the tire of his father (country) to give education and wealth to his son. I was the concerned and far-minded son who seeks visionary change in the way we interact with each other in every aspects (economically, racially & politically). After all, that's the reason in the first place for the government to send us out here; to bring back the expertise, visions and leadership capabilities to improve the country's well being.

Learn to be a problem solver than being a problem maker.

Israel attacks Gaza for about a week now and has killed to mount of 680 civilians including innocent children, women and men. Let us pray for their safety and that the world league can resort to a quick solution to end the war.

But for now, I hope that the people in Gaza would know that most of the world population is concern about their safety. It will help them to gain strength to find will to live, knowing that they are not alone in this world.

I cried many nights feeling their sufferings. For much of my might, that is the only thing that I can do now. What's your role in the current agenda?

I just woke up this morning and suddenly missing my mom & dad. In the deep midst of soaking up this song, I realized one thing, I shouldn't put my pleasure before my family! In a much easier way to interpret it, I shouldn't get married before I have the chance to take care of my mom & dad first!

It's just plain unfair if I decided to get married before fulfilling my duty as a child. They had been raising me to be an honorable person in life and the least that I could do is to return the favor. Taking care of my own family before raising a new one.

Mak & Abah, now I realized that your saying "NO" to most of the things that I want are the best thing that you could do to protect me. Because of that, I'm not a spoiled brat, I learned in time to be responsible, I learned to be independent because you insists my stay in a boarding school, I learned to be respectful to other people and most importantly, I learned to be thankful to you, Mak & Abah.

Hello everyone!

I would like to take this opportunity to wish Happy Holidays to everyone who reads my blog. Because it's the end of semester and a semester break, lots of you have plans for the break. Therefore I wish you guys to have a safe journey and come back revitalized with a new spirit for new semester.

I'll be staying here in State College for the rest of the break. If any of you guys need my help; watching over your car, stuffs etc, do give me a call. I know, it's lame for sitting here doing nothing, but hey, I'm not complaining! If I have the resources, I would love to travel myself.

For those who's always asking me "kenape ko xbjalan winter ni? saving nak kawin eh?", I can only say that, no, I'm not saving for my marriage, I'm saving for my future. If you guys are in my shoes, you would understand =)

That's why I'm not complaining that I'm stuck here in State College for winter break, I'm not complaining that I don't have money to even eat out, I'm being thankful to god for all the things that I already have. Being healthy and loved by people around me made me happy enough.

I've just done with my finals (which was only 1 paper on Monday morning at 8am!) and I'll be resting my ass off till January :) It feels good because I've done with the semester, but feeling quite sad actually for leaving all the works that keep me busy. People don't understand how the world works...sometimes

I've to be honest, I'm pissed to those who think that the world revolves around them! Come on, be realistic. You can have all the excuses in the world if you don't want to come, but don't try to take advantage over people's kindness!

I'm saying this out loud is because I'm not happy with some of the people here in State College, particularly Malaysian who lives off campus. I know it's cold, it's wet, it's snowy and all bunch of excuses you can come up with. But coming to a social event hosted by MASA should be on top of your list. We are doing it to close the gap between Malaysian here so that when we passes by each other, we can call you by names, rather than "hey you".

For that to happen, everyone needs to have understanding. If you want us (seniors with cars) to help you, show some effort first. Come to the place and we can consider sending you guys home. (Unless we are passing by your place and we can stop by to pick you up) . Or, give us a call and offer some gas money. It doesn't work like we are the only persons that escorted you guys in & out of the event. Give & take a little.

Speaking about politeness, if you want us to help you, give us a call directly rather than passing the message through someone else. It's not polite you know.

I don't like to push adults around, because adults are big enough to think for themselves. The world works both ways, there should be enough understanding of how things goes around the world before you can live a better life. Grow up!

The need to save

I've been stuck at home too long. My brain is already grinding to a halt at times because of my a** stuck inside State College. I need a vacation. I need to go somewhere that's unfamiliar to me. My brain needs to grow. Previously, we (me and my housemates) used to drive 3-4 hours bi-weekly to go and buy halal chicken in Pittsburg. Nowadays, we hardly even have time to go to the Walmart anymore. Barang rumah slalu abis dulu, xsempat nak stock up!

However, I need to save money for my future. At the end of last summer, my mother and sister made me realize how much of money that I need to have to be able to sustain my life after graduation. Let say I didn't get a job straight after graduation, I need to have money to cover my daily expenses for at least 6 months!

This is the worst case scenario for me, following the current financial turmoil all over the globe. I'm not surprise in the next 2-3 years, fresh graduates will have a hard time to secure a job in the field of their own. It's the reality! World financial/economic state is at its most vulnerable moment. Once it collapses, those without cold-cash will suffer. Hence, strengthening my will to save money.

It's ok to have fun/experience at the place we are studying. That's the beauty of getting the chance to study overseas. Nevertheless, we must not forget our future that lays in front of us. Spend your money wisely and if you are able to save, do it. There's nothing bad about it.

We are currently the winning-est team of the season (tied with Utah),racking up 8 wins in 8 consecutive weeks. Everybody is looking forward for Penn State vs. Ohio State matchup next week. I know it's going to be a hell hole for Nittany Lions, playing in a big game at Columbus.

Nevertheless, Penn State this year looks very tough and stubborn even though they are trailing in the game. Hoping to meet Texas in the National Championship game in Miami, which if Penn State make the cut, I'll definitely be going!

Homecoming weekend!!

I've just got out from the 2 weeks of brutality! The last 2 weeks have been packing with 6 exams and few papers needed to be submit. Glad it's over though.

This weekend is the homecoming weekend at Penn State! I'm thrilled for the weekend but not only because of the game against Michigan on Saturday (we have a 9-lost streak against them!), but also because of the serenading events all over the campus.

The homecoming weekend is kicking off with a parade from the stadium to the other side of the campus (approx. 1.5 miles track). There are floats (kereta berhias) built by frats & other organization on campus. It's a fun-filled atmosphere with people lining up on the roadside to see each group parading across the campus. But sadly, I'm stuck at work and could only imagine to be outside right now, watching the parade with a creamery cone in my hand..Sabo je la!

Tomorrow night, there is a pumpkin carving competition at one of the residential halls on campus. I want to participate but I'm going to the game tomorrow, thus can't make it in time before the competition starts. Oh well, there is always next year! I've always wanted to try and carved pumpkins. It'll be so cool! hehe..

All in all, the campus is jammed-pack with people. I'm glad to see that everybody is having a good time. Chants of "We are...Penn State" is bursting in air. With every turn that you take, you'll see strangers holding their hands in the air and ask for a high five. This truly lift up the spirit of Penn State as a whole unified-community. No one is a stranger in Happy Valley and if you condone the right colors, you won't be left out from the crowd.

Raya 2008 at Penn State!

This is my 3rd raya in the States, far from family. Well, the nights coming up to 1 Syawal was difficult as I've started to listen and sings to the chime of Raya Songs. Those evergreen songs really capture the spirit of Hari Raya!

Raya 2008 at Penn State wasn't a bad idea! We have all of this new friends (freshman+sophomores+grad students) who arrived here at the start of the Fall semester. Our numbers jump up to 122 people which scared everyone at first, but we manage to live harmoniously. A bigger number doesn't mean that we can be called 'kampung melayu' easily. For now, we hardly meet with each other as Penn State is big with its population maxing out at 45,000 people this year!

Even though we hardly meet, once we do a get together, almost everyone join in. I was so impressed and admire with everybody's cameraderie. Living hand in hand without the mindset of 'kampung melayu'. Everyone is free to study and experience the american way of living.

Anyway, MASA this year came up with the great idea on how to get all of the malaysian to get to know each other. We divide everyone into 3 areas; which are East,Middle and West. Each of these area do their own Raya Celebration at 3 different dates. This measure are taken to encourage everyone to go to these areas and meet with each other while celebrating the joyous holiday. It turn out well and almost everyone came to each area's celebration!

Presidential Debate: Coverage

Did anyone get to catch the presidential debate last night? I know it's a boring question and maybe 'nerdy' sounding question too, but despite that, the debate last night was very interesting. (atleast to me!)

For the second time in my life that I was enjoying watching real debate till the end. (the first time was between Anwar Ibrahim & Shabery Cheek) The focus on the debate is to find a clear differences between Obama & McCain doctrine. Both of them did tremendous job answering the questions.

However,

I was blown away with the coverage that the debate get, it shows how independent the media here can be. They can show whoever has the right to campaign without bias or limitations.
*Almost all, cable & satellite news media covered the debate last night.

This is the kind of media that we need back in Malaysia now. I'm not siding anybody, but I'm talking about the real issues that we have in Malaysia. Media should be free to cover anyone-regardless of race,religion or political beliefs. In building 'Bangsa Malaysia', everyone has the right to challenge the authority and presented it in a rightful way. After all, the authoritarians need check & balance from other people criticism.

It isn't like Malaysia has no freedom of media at all, just in times, there are too many restrictions upon what the media can & cannot cover. For me, as long as the media follow the line of 'Perlembagaan' (constitution), they should be free to cover anything.

Give me a free media and I'll give you a free-will respect.

Hey guys! I'm back and going to keep updating..(atleast..I hope! hehe) Sorry for the missing times. Been busy for such a long time till I forgot that I actually have a blog! I'm planning to come back earlier but keep on delaying it. So, in accordance to this monthly celebration, I wish to stay here and keep on posting!

I've read most of my blogging friends are posting a so called 'marriage survey' and I found it quite interesting. I may end up do it my self. Bukan gatai nak kawin, saja2 gatai nak join the crowd.

By the way, I would like to congratulate my friends in UIUC who had successfully passed their first SOA/CAS exams! Congratulations guys. I envy and admire your accomplishment..Ni bukan bodek aa

Last but not least, I did have a terrific time back in Malaysia last Summer. Everything went well according to plan. Restoring love with my family, adoring time with my love, met my beloved friends, ate the fattening but lovely food and interning at a not-so-loving-but-luckily-they-pay-me-well-place (a.k.a CIMB Aviva). I'm glad to have the opportunity to be back and hoping to be back again next Summer! Insyaallah.

If people ask me, whether was it worth the while loosing my precious B'day celebration with family, Fara & friends for this Midwest Games? I can just say that I kept my word to Fara "I won't go back home empty handed" and that is all that really matters to me.

Owh plus, I've just got a confirmation email from CIMB Aviva (M) that my intern application has been accepted! I'll start the program this coming June 9th till August 15th in KL. It feels like a dream, finishing my 2nd year at Penn State with the cherry on top.

Yeah, guess what? I'm still working even though it's already summer. A wet & cold summer I must say so far! It has been raining for days now & it's freakin' 7c outside. I don't know what has the weather come to these days..Probably global warming. Thanks to us who don't want to walk to masjid or take the bus to walmart! hehe..

Last night was the MASA PSU Grad Dinner 2008. It was great! Though we only had the whole 2.5 hrs in the room. But still, everything went on smoothly. Thanks to our dear Ms. Coordinator, Zack. The day went off skeptically as the forecast was thunderstorm with heavy wind from afternoon onwards. Alhamdulillah, the weather holds great for us to have fun in the sun! Faiez had a big relief as he's the coordinator for the event. Kudos to him and everyone who volunteered.

The past weekend

There are few activities on campus last weekend. The two outstanding events are the Blue & White game (Football Spring game) and ISC Spring Festival. Our BW game is FREE! hehe..

Blue & White game saw the most attendance it had so far. 73000+ fans packed the lower deck of Beaver stadium to see themselves how Penn State can be projected for next season's games. I must say that they look pretty good though having few minor mistakes on the field. I have high hopes for them! Finally, I think we can beat Michigan after 9-Straight losses. Go Lions!

It seems funny. From a person who plays rugby, who likes to belittle American Football because they use pads, I turn out to be one of the game biggest fan. I'm not kidding. Let it be College Football or NFL, I just love the game. Maybe because all of those advertisements and endorsements that they get from public. Whatever it is, Americans are very passionate about...almost everything in their life! They get my respect on that.

ISC Spring Festival wrote another great story in its glorious diary. The Malaysians perform infamous Silat during the night. It was the first performance which left quite a high bar for others to top. Indeed, it is such a great night with performances from almost 20 different cultures. We also put up a Malaysian Booth at the event. Spearheaded by our own Ms. Sabrina, the booth I can quite say one of the best at the event. Kudos to all the volunteers and performers for Malaysia.

ISC stands for International Students Council and last weekend's event is their biggest event to signify diversity on campus. With international students from 150 countries, Penn State does uphold diversity as one of its pride.

I consider myself lucky to choose Penn State with all this great programs and diversity that we have. Though Penn State football is not the best program in the country (tapi one of the best la...hehe), at least we have the living legend who coached football for 42 years. En. JoePa! Bile kamu nak bersara ni...?

My sister's wedding

Yep! My big sister is going to get married this Summer. I don't really mind that (coz she's going to have someone else to pick on after this!haha), but I do mind when it is almost like my wedding!

I help her to prepare & being ask to buy her stuffs for the hantaran! Aiyak..Sabo je la. Nevermind though, at least she's happy. I don't mind keluar masuk kedai 'V' tu. Tapi agak segan le. The lady in the shop said that I look familiar! Hahaha, I don't want to be a regular at a girl's shop!

So this is also a business proposition for YOU. Who wants to be my business partner to open kedai 'V' in Malaysia? Senang, coz xpayah pesan dekat adik yang belajar kat oversea ni beli barang. Haa, bukan setakat kakak je yang pesan, member2 sekali. =P

I went to their show at Penn State last night and it was hysterical! The event was organized by Muslim Student Association at Penn State (MSA). I can't imagine Muslim comedian that uses "clean jokes" can be really funny until I saw them yesterday.

Allah Made Me Funny is a comedy tour consist of 3 Muslim comedian from 3 different background. Mohammed Amer is a Palestinian refugee and has been in the US for 18 years. Preacher Moss is an african american convert, Philly-born comedian while Azhar Usman has an Indian-American descent. The trio settle on telling out jokes from their personal experiences touching Islam stereotypes, terrorism, general knowledge and current affairs.
I've personally talked to them after their show last night and they told me that they had been to Malaysia for quite a number of times. The last visit was a tour with Raihan (for those who doesn't know who Raihan is, please comeback to your roots! =P) .

Brother Preacher Moss told me that Raihan teach him how to say "ohh boy.." in Malay. At first I was stunt and thinking what it could be, later, he suddenly uttered "makk aih..". I laughed
and show the thumbs up to him.

I really enjoyed my time at their show and it makes me thinking, how lucky and rich I am being a Muslim. Not rich in the sense of financial assets but in the brotherhood of Islam. Judging from their stories last night, they had been to 100s of country and never they had feel unwelcome by the Muslim community at any place. Even though, we as the Muslim have different views, backgrounds, tastes and language, the Islamic teaching brings us closer together as one big family.

Marriage

I know this topic is a bit sensitive to us (young adults), but you can never argue that it never flashes at least once on your mind (more so if you're with somebody!). But it just excites my mind a little bit at the moment because there are a lot of people throwing me this kind of question. When are you gonna get married?

First & foremost, I just wanted to thank all the people who ask me that question. It shows that people are really concerned about me. (huhh..perasan! haha) No, it's just that suddenly, an overwhelmingly gust of "marriage topic" seems unusual. I remember once an OldBoy told me,

"hang tengok; mak hang susah hati nak hantar hang belajaq jauh2, next time hang tengok mak hang macam ni lagi, nanti masa hang nak kawin!"

I guess it is true! Have you ever tried and call your mom & suddenly you uttered "mak, nak kawin!". I can bet her reactions will be ... shocked.

People tend to be affectionate when the time is right. When is the right time? It depends on individuals. Marriage is still a broad prospect (for me, at least!). Even if it is "bertunang", it's unhealthy for young couples to get engaged in such a long time.

In my humble opinion (IMHO), long period of engagement just shattered the sole purpose of getting engaged at the beginning. Getting engaged is the period to prepare, to discuss in further refined agenda of the marriage, to bring the two families closer and extensively knowing each other. Not the act of reserving or "cop". Plus, when you are engaged in such a long time, you'll tend to think deeply on stuffs that may never even happen in the course of your marriage. This can lead to arguments, misunderstanding and worse yet, break-up. So, tak bagus tunang lame2.

We can never exonerate the feeling of boredom (mundane in repetitive actions), but we have the power to spice it up. Don't act as a matured adult when you WANT to but be a matured adult when you NEED to. Making decision about marrying someone is the situation which you NEED to be a matured adult.

I have plans, I have ideas, I have my goals & definitely one of them is to get married in a "young" age. For now, I know that I have a soccer tournament this weekend and also my professional actuarial exams to be planned. Summer getaways lagi! Haha..Live life well & fun!

The waiting game

Arsenal kalah! =( Enough said. Sabar je la.

Anyway, it's been few days since my last post. Dulu, at the beginning, I vowed to put up something everyday! I guess all bloggers wish for the same thing =) Haha. Nevermind, it is fun to wait for something. Isn't it?

Like if you bought something online, and you know you want it to arrive quickly (though you choose the cheapest shipping charges). You'll definitely check the tracking status every single hour! Or, when you send out an email to someone (make that an important or official email), you really want that person to reply ASAP, even though in your email written gracefully "hope to hear from you soon". Or, the closest one to our heart, when you send someone a message or a comment on friendster/facebook/blog/snail mail?(waa,memories zaman sekola2), you really hope that person to see and reply back ASAP (at least I feel like that).

Waiting game is such an excitement for me. It keep you on your toes, vigilant, agile and alert. On the downside, it distracts you from the real issues surrounding you and become more self-centered. Either way, it still act as a very powerful mind-stimuli which help us to educate ourselves to control our urges towards something or in a simple word: PATIENCE.

Patience is a Virtue.

There you go. We had a blast and like I said, we did learn a lot on how to conduct ourselves in front of VVIPs. I thanked everyone who could make it and also to the organizer Mr. Peter Lello (LCCC). Hope to be there again!

p/s: if you guys get the chance to meet 'important people', I advised you to take it. Not to 'kipas2' but believe me, it'll help you to build confidence which eventually become vital skills during interview session.

Going to LCCC this weekend

I'll be going to LCCC (Luzerne County Community College) this weekend, bringing along our 'silat troop' for a Malaysian Art Exhibition. It is on Friday, 4/4/2008 at 6.00pm. The art exhibition will be entrusted by Mr. Chew Fang Chin, a sarawakian painter. There are few VVIPs that are going to attend the event:

Malaysian Ambassador to the US
Consulate General of Malaysia in NYC
Malaysian Tourism NYC President & VPs
Tukang2 ampu VVIPs
Penyibuk2

Anyway, it's always an honor when students get the chance to meet high ranked officers. I'm looking forward to meet all of them, not to 'kipas2', but to gain experience and knowledge on how to behave in front of them. The best part is, we get to sit at a table with the Ambassador personally during the next day breakfast! So you can assume that pictures will be flying in this blog soon! =)

One may think, it seems that when you become a student, you get the chance to meet high-ranked officials more than when you are working..hmm, menarik3!(kate syahir..)
